Course Descriptions
The ESL courses are intended to provide ESL students with the necessary language skills and competencies necessary to be successful in further coursework at DeVry. Each course is one trimester (15 weeks) in duration.
BEGINNING
Students enter the course with a command of basic grammar and communications skills. They will continue to build oral and written language skills through second-language teaching methodologies applied to situations beyond their immediate environment. (Placement by assessment.)
INTERMEDIATE
This course extends the range of students' skills in handling more complex educational and social needs. The course focuses on developing fluency and ease of language use while manipulating more complex English language structures, both orally and in written forms. (Prerequisite: Beginning ESL, or placement by assessment)
ADVANCED
This course builds upon students' abilities to listen, speak, read and write English with a degree of structural accuracy and communication skill sufficient to handle most formal and informal academic and nonacademic situations. (Prerequisite: Intermediate ESL, or placement by assessment.)
